NC-BIIS 2026 — When the Whole Ecosystem Showed Up

The 1st NC Biotech Innovation & Investment Summit is the kind of convening this platform is built around: a Nobel laureate on the keynote stage, state leaders in the room, and roughly 300 scientists, founders, and investors trading notes across borders. Here is how the first one came together.

The 1st NC Biotech Innovation & Investment Summit

Under the theme "Beyond Borders, Beyond Biotech Frontiers," the inaugural NC-BIIS gathered leaders from academia, the global biopharma industry, CRO/CDMO partners, and the investment community for a single dense day of cross-border exchange — hosted by SAPA-NC, the North Carolina chapter of the Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association.

The program ran six core sessions and nine panel discussions across the frontier that defines modern drug development: AI-driven discovery, genetic medicines, oncology, biomedical engineering, startups and capital, and global expansion. Organized in just 49 days, it still drew roughly 300 attendees and 25+ strategic sponsors from the US, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The headline moment belonged to 2019 Nobel laureate Dr. Gregg L. Semenza of Johns Hopkins, who opened with a keynote on targeting hypoxia-inducible factors to treat cancer and blinding eye disease — tracing a clean line from Nobel-winning basic science to a real clinical pipeline. Duke's Dr. Bruce Donald followed on AI- and physics-based protein design, and CAS Foreign Member Dr. Xiaofan Wang closed on China's pharma "inflection point" and the case for US–China collaboration.

North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall sent a video endorsement; Durham's mayor and a state representative addressed the room. What they were marking was simple: the Research Triangle — home to 385+ life-science companies and 7 of the world's top 10 CROs — now has a standing place where its science, capital, and talent meet in person.
